About.me
So I’ve been a Flavors.me user for a while now and for the most part it’s fine and does what it needs to do. But then along came About.me which is pretty similar. Each site are basically landing pages for all your stuff on the net.
They pretty much have the same services available (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, LinkedIn, etc…) with Flavors.me edging them out with a more services (maybe due to them being out a lot longer). Also both add the ability to add sites via RSS as well.
Both sites allow monitoring of site data however Flavors.me allows you to use your Google Analytic code on the site (boom). Also for paid members, you can use your own domain on Flavors.me, something About.me tells me they are looking into in the future.
However, Flavors.me has more built in templates compared to 1, that’s right I said one, that is available on About.me. Ok, About.me is still starting out so I’m sure they will add more templates to choose from.
Honestly, there really isn’t much difference between them. They both suck at pulling in your latest feeds (read delays or actually never till you bug the staff *cough* Flavors.me) They both require way too many rights when accessing your data. (Honestly do you really need the ability to delete my Flickr files About.me?) And they both suck on mobile devices.
So which one should you choose? Well the choice is obvious… Flavors.me because About.me is in closed beta. But once out of beta, because both sites are so similar it will be really based on which ones offer the most customization and services to pull from.
I think I’m gonna change my Flavors page to look like my About page.
Disclaimer, I actually pay for my Flavors.me account but whomever works out that permissions issues, full mobile rendering and has the feeds updated timely I’m like so there.
