I’ve been searching for a compact camera to take with me on times where I don’t actually need to bring my main camera. My requirements are pretty basic as the camera must have:
- Full manual controls
- Working hotshoe
- Decent sync speed
- Raw format compatible with Aperture 3
- Fast-ish lens
- Viewfinder
Of the cameras I’ve been looking at, most had all of these features. But one thing that bugged me was the lack of a true optical viewfinder and this is just inherent in the design of these cameras.
As such I’ve narrowed down my choices to Sammy’s up and coming TL500/EX1 and the current leader in compact cameras the Panny LX3. But now things have changed after my visit to Target.
I was strolling down the camera isle there where I noticed the Nikon D3000. What caught my eye was the small size of the camera. I held it and thought, “Wow this is tiny. If only Canon made a small camera like this I could use my…” that’s when I saw the Canon 550D on display next to it.
I held it with both hands and immediately noticed that it was indeed a compact camera. After goofing around with it, I noticed the price and it wasn’t that much more than the compact cameras I was considering (and this is Target pricing so of course I could do much better elsewhere)
So in my hands I had a compact camera that has full manual controls, a working hot shoe, a sync speed of around 1/250, RAW format compatible with Aperture 3 and an optical viewfinder. But what about the glass right?
Mounting any of my current lenses would defeat the purpose of this camera so I figured I would mount an old M42 prime lens in the 28 - 35mm range to the front of this and call it a day.
The 550D is like a little toy camera: so small and cute.
