Protect Ya Neck

"I'ma get mad deep like a threat, blow up your project, then take all your assets" - Raekwon

Woo, @photosip came back hard! So of course I just couldn't sit back while I watched him count my money!

I enlisted @richardcelis to help me with my response to his photo. In this scene I play @photosip who some how got caught running around with all that money. Better luck tomorrow holmz!

For this shot I really wanted to do it in broad daylight since @photosip took his at midnight. Lighting was provided by 2 580EX II in a shoot through umbrella. While I could have just shot 1 580EX bare I wanted a more diffused look to the light and from past photos I knew that the umbrella would just eat the light so to combat that I doubled up on the flash. In addition, I placed a 430EX off camera right to balance the shadows made by the 580s.

Blame It

"Blame it on the vodka blame it on the henny. Blame it on the blue tap got you feeling dizzy" - Jamie Foxx

I figured it was about time that I called out @photosip's photo so that's what I did for tonight. I had asked @monatheism if we still had any liquor left and she gave me the "duh" look. So I packed a few bottles with me and headed out.

I placed the bottles on the ground to somewhat judge focus then proceeded to light the area with 1 430EX. I took a test shot and felt that a bit of colour would work with this, so I gelled a 550EX blue, placed it on the ground and pointed it directly at the tall clear bottle.

In the van was my MacBook running onOne's DSLR Remote server software and a ad-hock network to which I was able to trigger the shot via my iPhone. If you look closely at the OOF right hand you can see I'm trying to conceal the iPhone while triggering it. Honestly, I can't wait for it to do focus as that will help out tremendously.

Twitterholic

No sooner than posting my final project50 photo that I get called out on one of my shots by @photosip.

It's all about addiction and besides drugs and alcohol there are other things you can be addicted to like.... twitter. I twitter everywhere: home, work, going to the store, getting gas, just about everywhere. And when the fail whale makes it appearance... ooh don't even start!

This also gave me a good excuse to try out onOne Software's DSRL remote for the iPhone. The camera was tethered to my MacBook running an ad-hoc network to which the iPhone was connected to. So while it may look like I'm twittering on the iPhone, I'm actually triggering the camera... neato burrito eh?

Trigger your camera from your iPhone

onOne Software has just released the DSLR Remote app for the iPhone. This software allows you to remotely trigger your Canon camera from your iPhone. As soon as @therealmikewong tweeted the availability of it at the app store I quickly purchased the pro version. So here is my quick review of the app in list style:

Pros:
  • adjustment of shutter, aperture and ISO
  • frame the shot by viewing the live view feed
  • ability to review the shot just taken
Cons:
  • lack of autofocus (you still need to prefocus if you're doing self portraits)
  • unable to save images just to camera (current options are computer or computer+camera)
  • unreliable fire button (this may have something to do with the iPhone's accelerometer because it will fire on command if you're sitting still but if you're jumping up and down you can see the fire button armed "red" but until you stay still the camera won't fire)

I realize this is still version 1 of the software and onOne will continue to improve on it. I hope in future updates they add the ability to lock in focus as well as making the trigger function more reliable.

For those that must

Daily photo project 50 of 50

I've reach the end of my 50 photos for 50 days with a 50mm lens project. I've learned that I really like this lens is great stopped down and wide open at f/1.2. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is an amazing piece of glass and despite what you may read online this lens is truly a dream to shoot with.

The other thing that I learned was all the different ways to light something. I deviated from the rest of the #project50 group by also including lighting in my daily shots because I also wanted to learn to work lighting with the lens. I'm glad I did as it gives me other tools in my bag that I can pull out when the situation arises.

Photography is like playing the piano. The more you practice the more stuff you can refer to. You would be one boring piano player if you could only improv using only the blues scale, same goes for photography.

On to todays daily. @photosip had DM me if I had a big finale planned and I replied back that I didn't. I decided to shoot a tomato that I was using to prepare for lunch (I was making loco moco for my daughter and myself) and needed a veggie even though we all know a tomato is a fruit.

Since I had the patties frying in the pan I needed to work fast so I decided to light the tomato with a single 430 in a shoot through umbrella. To make the background a bit interesting I pointed a 550 at the wall against the angle. The first shot was ok but the background didn't look like much so I placed 2 cups up water in front of the 550 to put some texture back there.

Why 2 cups? Because I had a 2 cup measuring cup out (remember I was cooking)

Daily photo project 47 of 50

With our Memorial Day BBQ in full swing @richardcelis asked if I could take a photo of his new shoes. I took this as an opportunity to do my daily as well.

Being that these shoes are called "air"max of course I couldn't resist stringing them up with some dental floss to make them float.

I proceeded to blow out the background wall with a 550EX and used a 580EX II to bring up the shoe. I lit the heal of the shoe with a 430EX but only in post did I notice I totally blew out the bottom of the sole. D'oh!

I think he said he wanted to use this for his #fb page or something like that.

Daily photo project 46 of 50

I'm just exhausted right now and while I took photos today, I didn't do my daily photo. So I decided to do a quick 2 way light photo.

The main subject is the 580EX II which was lit by a 430EX off camera right.

The 580EX II in turn was used to light a lens in the background. Hence the title. Lame I know but I'm about to pass out.

Have a good one!

My 16-35 is my work horse lens. I use this for a lot of my work and not to mention my daily setup shots. It's really a fantastic lens. I like, of course, the focal length, speed, color and saturation capture on this.

I wanted to give the lens an urban edgy glamor look (is there such a thing) so I placed it on the hood of my car to get that carbon weave action going then lit it with my DIY beauty dish for that BAM in your face lighting.

House for rent

Got a call to take some photos of a home going up for rent so I packed my F6 with a bunch of lights and headed out the door. Most of the photos are of the standard stuff. FOH, BOH, great room, kitchen, bedrooms, you know standard stuff. In those cases I exposed for ambient and brought up the rest of the room with flash.

For some unknown reason I decided to have some fun with the staircase. Really nothing special about it but I decided to play with it. I first started by exposing for the light coming in from the window above. Then I lit the top part of the stair case with a 550 on a light stand pointed up. To bring up the first floor I placed a 430 on a light stand in the great room to my right and pointed that towards the back wall ( you can see the light reflection on the wall of the staircase). Now here is the weird part to give it some dramatic flare I decided to place a 580 on the 3 step and bounce that to give some funky light/shadow look to the stairs.

Don't ask me why I just did and at the end I came out with something with some shadows that I actually liked. Go figure.

Just like in hip hop you just can't let people call you out and not do anything about it. That's the theme Stephen and I will be doing.

One calls one out with a photo and the other responds.

So my photo today is in response to his photo Reflection Time. Reflecting time is for suckaz I stop time like Hiro Nakumra!

Daily photo project 43 of 50

Something like a phenomenon
Telling your body to come along, but white lines blow away

Isn't that the truth. Since I'm working from home today I decided to get my daily out a bit earlier than normal.

On the way back from dropping the girl off at school White lines came on Pandora and that's what lead me to shoot this today, cuz you know we just got tons of this stuff laying around because that's how we roll in Vegas.

My friend asked me a while ago what style of photography did I want to shoot. I thought about it long and hard and decided if I had to just pick one style it would be editorial since I want to place things the way I see fit to tell my story. So you can't believe everything I photograph or can you?

Main lighting came from a 430EX in a shoot through umbrella camera left but I noticed it was a bit dead towards the right so I bounced a 550EX off a box that was sitting there for a bit of fill.

After running wild with my Mavica I picked up a Canon PowerShot G2 and started to learn off that. This was the first camera I owned that had manual controls as well as a hot shoe!

I wanted to show the beauty of this simple point and shoot so I simply lit it with just 1 flash in a shoot through umbrella to the right so that I could have the shadows fall off nicely camera left.

And yes my PowerShot is the black edition.

Daily photo project 39 of 50

First I want to say thank you to all the email about my daily photos. I do notice an number of: how do I get the background so dark or so white or somewhere in between. Instead of answering the emails individually I'd thought I'd put it on my blog so that everyone can benefit from it.

This first shot is done with only ambient lighting that came from a chandelier behind camera right. This is just to give you the idea that you don't have to work in a totally dark room.

Camera settings:
1/4 f/8 ISO1600

The main thing to keep in mind is your subject to background distance. You want to be able to prevent your key light from spilling onto your background. For a small object I find a distance of 5 - 7' acceptable when using a shoot through umbrella as key. If you're using a much more restrictive modifier like a snoot or a grid you can get a bit closer to your background if space is an issue.

In this situation I found a setting of 1/160 f/8 ISO800 to be more than adequate to get me a black photo. And what I mean by that is: press the shutter and all you see is a black image. From this point on all the light that you will see will come from off camera flash. Why 1/160 f/8 ISO800 than something else?

My Canon 40D max sync speed is 1/250 but my transmitters battery was getting low so I was getting shutter creep. 1/160 was the fastest I could get till I replaced the battery. Because I wasn't concerned about ambient light dialing up to the max sync speed is one of the ways to kill this. f/8 was selected because I wanted to get as much DOF possible and because of this I choose an ISO of 800 so my flash wouldn't have to work to hard.

Shutter, aperture and ISO all play into dialing the correct settings in your camera. The way to gain this type of control is to shoot in full manual and not any of the semi manual modes or any of the mountain and running man modes.

Using only 1 flash in a shoot through umbrella positioned camera left the background stayed black while the flash gave enough light to illuminate the Wii remote as well as the table to give a nice reflection

Camera settings:
1/160 f/8 ISO800

Stobist info: 1 430EX 1/64 power shoot through umbrella camera left

Now since we have control of the background we can play with it by placing another flash behind the remote to light up the wall.

Camera settings:
1/160 f/8 ISO800

Stobist info:
1 430EX 1/64 power shoot through umbrella camera left
1 550EX 1/16 power behind Wii remote pointed at wall

If you wanted to get some color back there you can simply place some color gels on the flash head.

Camera settings:
1/160 f/8 ISO800

Stobist info:
1 430EX 1/64 power shoot through umbrella camera left
1 550EX 1/16 power gelled red behind Wii remote pointed at wall

Camera settings:
1/160 f/8 ISO800

Stobist info:
1 430EX 1/64 power shoot through umbrella camera left
1 550EX 1/16 power gelled blue behind Wii remote pointed at wall

Or if you wanted to get that whole seamless white background all you need to do is juice up the power to the background light. Since the table I'm using reflects nicely it will pick up on all that light coming from the background and just blend in

Camera settings:
1/160 f/8 ISO800

Stobist info:
1 430EX 1/32 power shoot through umbrella camera left
1 550EX 1/2 power behind Wii remote pointed at wall

In the setup shot you can see the relative distance between the wall and the table, where the lights are placed as well as camera position.

Thanks again for all the retweets, comments and favorites on twitter. I hope the above helps and if you still have any questions post in the comments here, on flickr or send me an email and I'll get back to you.

Have a good one!

Daily photo project 38 of 50

The latest update to Leopard was released earlier this week and while I updated all of the official Macs I held off on the hackint0sh till today just incase something went wrong. Guess what, nothing went wrong. The update went smoothly. I'm not getting the extended battery performance that is being circulated around the net though.

Here I just wanted to show the difference in size between a MacBook and a MSI Wind. If you thought the MacBook was small think again!

For setup I placed a 550EX behind the MacBook and pointed it directly at the wall. I noticed that I had some light spill towards the right edge of the Wind. I controlled that by placing one of my daughter's puzzle boxes to block that side from the flash.

For key light I wanted to do an overhead light simulation but I have no boom but I do have a tripod so I decided just to put the camera on the tripod and hand hold the light stand myself.

In order to prevent contamination of the key light to the background light I covered up the top portion of the umbrella and just left the lower part exposed.

The camera's shutter and ISO where selected to control the LCD of the computers. Everything else is lit by the 430EX.

@monatheism got me hooked on Mafia Wars for the iPhone and let's just say today I sorta forgot that I needed to take a picture.

Good thing I had my background stands still out so I quickly set those up along with the bed sheet to do do one of those product photography style of things.

I placed a 550EX on the floor to blow out the bedsheet and a 430EX in a shoot through umbrella to provide some lighting to the front. In order to get the LCD screen to appear I metered for that using a combination of shutter and ISO.

To meet today's theme of: light I shot it with light.... oh kay so unoriginal I know I know but this game you just have to play it!

Daily photo project 36 of 50

Again I go along with the group's theme of flower(s) for today's daily. Honestly I'm not a flower person but as luck would have it my daughter was craving some fruit so we went down to the local Fresh & Easy and on the way out one of the worker's gave us some flowers. Talk about luck huh?

I wanted to do something simple for today's shot so I placed the flower in a glass and lit it with a 430EX in a shoot through umbrella. I pointed the umbrella down and kept the distance close. I noticed though that the backside looked a bit dead so I placed a 580EX II in another shoot through umbrella close and right behind the flower.

For good measure I used the black cover of the umbrella to cover up the side that faced the wall to prevent any spill as I was lighting the wall with a gridded 550EX.

So here is my daily for today.... a flower.

Another daily where a bunch of us on twitter picked a common theme and today's theme is book(s). I had a few ideas in my head that I wanted to do but the one I wanted didn't pan out (you know how professional models can get).

So for this shot I decided to take out one of my photo books (Stoppees' Guide to Photography & Light) about lighting and place a speedlight right on top of it. What is funny/sad is the speedlight actually fell and broke the plastic stand. Good thing I had a spare!

Daily photo project 33 of 50

browsing flickr I noticed a lot of gear shots so I figured I should do one too since I wanna fit in and all.

I honestly bought this lens just to shoot auto racing since I just ♥ cars. Paired with a Canon 2x II Extender makes for an affordable 400mm lens.

I originally planed to shoot it with 1 430EX in a shoot through umbrella but found that the shadows were a bit harsh so I added a 550 pointing up in a shoot through umbrella to give it a bit more "lift"

It feels good that some of your silly photos get published by Flickr Explore.

Daily photo project 29 of 50

Sometimes I wonder why I signed up to take a photo a day for 50 days but then I take a photo that actually combines what I've done in prior photos. And that's what it's all about right? Learning.

For today's photo I used what I learned from hanging things in daily 4 and blowing out a white background in daily 16.

So maybe I won't rag on this project and just keep an open mind about it. Who knows maybe I'll learn something else!

Oh yes, setup can be found here.

Oh look over there to the right, it's a crazy man pulling stuff out of a car. Woohoo!!!!

Can you tell I've already lost my mind? Honestly, I'm running out of ideas here so if you have something you would like me to shoot let me know either in the comments or on twitter. Or else you'll see more insane stuff like this.

Don't worry if you suggest something for me to shoot not only will I give you credit and I'll still do a setup shot like for today's photo.

Daily photo project 26 of 50

WTH, yeah I know what you're thinking. But hey it's a Lucha libre mask my brother brought back home to us from his trip to TJ. I think it's a great mask, there is another one which is pink with horns and hair, unfortunately it was sized for my daughter so I couldn't fit it.... darn it.

Either way I wanted to take a picture of it today because tomorrow is Cinco De Mayo! Lighting this time was provided by one 580EX with a shoot through umbrella and a 430EX in a snoot.

The umbrella was directly in front of me at a slight downward angle to give the main illumination with the 430 pointed at my back to give some definition to it. And yes, I'm holding that helmet again.

Daily photo project 25 of 50

Finally, the half way mark. I was so excited to get this far that I danced in joy! Doing a little shuffle work to a round house then to a gyro... yeah.. umo...

Well I am excited I got this far. Restricting my photography to just one focal length is tough. What is even tougher is coming up with different things to shoot to make it interesting for me and hopefully to those of you that are following me.

I really dressed up my wrist here and wanted to highlight it so I aimed a 430EX where my arms/hands would be. But to give some depth to the photo I placed a set of headphones in the back along with a iPod shuffle I had and lit that separately with a 580EX.

Now onwards to the last 25 photos!

And I haven't forgotten about you setup people out there. You know what to do.

Who knew?

So with this whole "Hey my photo got on Flickr Explore" I was pointed to a site that actually list which of your photos actually made it to this section of Flickr. Turns out 3 photos from my daily made it! Daily 15, Daily 17 and Daily 23!

Daily photo project 24 of 50

Inspired by yesterday's photo I decided to take the light show on the road. This time setting off early enough so that the lights wouldn't have to work as hard.

I placed a flash at either side of me to give me a bit of separation from the barrier behind me. Then I placed another flash in front of me pointed down at my shirt (found out yesterday that I got a nasty glare from the flash hitting the visor of the helmet).

Because I started off earlier I was able to light the photo at 1/4 power unlike yesterday's full power extravaganza.

As always the setup shot can be found here.

Flickr Explore

Well would you look at that, I guess making a fool out of myself gets people to notice :P Daily 23 of 50 made it on Flickr Explore. Neato

So how do you take a photo in the middle of the day without blowing out the background? Why you wait for the clouds to come in! Well that plus lighting your subject to heck!

I started off with the background lights which would allow me some separation from the wall. I placed 2 flashes on either side and set them on 11 (1/1 power for those that don't get that). In order to light me I placed a single flash off to the right and fired that at 11 as well.

Basically just blasting as much light as I can from these little flashes.
If you look closely at the shadows you can tell where the flashes are positioned. Fun huh... not really when you're running back and forth because you missed the automatic shutter!
